WAVES of protesting Iraqis marched against British soldiers, hurling stones and setting off homemade explosives in the southeastern city of Amarah yesterday, a day after clashes killed six protesters and wounded at least 11.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Tony Blair insisted yesterday that he was right to take military action in Iraq based on intelligence that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, though no such weapons have yet been found. Mr Blair said he believed the US-led Iraq Survey Group would find evidence of the weapons' existence, saying inspectors have found extensive evidence of concealment operations.

Mr Blair told the BBC that it would have been "irresponsible not to have acted upon" pre-war intelligence that Saddam's regime had weapons of mass destruction.
