Police promise tough line against trouble-makers

TROUBLEMAKERS planning to target the G8 summit were warned by police chiefs that “robust action” would be taken against them.

The warning came after officers were accused of adopting “inflammatory” and “over-the-top” tactics in Edinburgh.

Thousands of protesters are expected to take part in a march near the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire as leaders of the world’s richest countries gather there.

Police insisted they would not tolerate the sort of behaviour which sparked violent scenes in Edinburgh.

Around 60 protesters appeared in court yesterday after about 100 people were arrested.

The organisers of today’s march at Gleneagles claimed the policing at yesterday’s anarchist protest in Edinburgh was “over the top.”

G8 Alternatives, an umbrella group of peaceful anti-war and anti-poverty campaigners, called an emergency meeting with Tayside Police in the wake of yesterday’s scuffles on the streets.
