Spector case records released

POLICE responding to an emergency call at the home of legendary record producer Phil Spector in February found a blood-spattered gun, broken teeth and the body of an actress who had been shot in the mouth, according to court records.

Lana Clarkson, 40, was found slumped in a chair in Spector’s hilltop mansion in Alhambra, east of Los Angeles. Her broken teeth were scattered around the foyer and stairway, and a blood-spattered .38 calibre Colt revolver lay under her left leg, the records say.

The Associated Press obtained the search warrants and police reports yesterday from author Carlton Smith, who petitioned the court to have them released.

Spector, 62, is charged with murdering Clarkson, which he has denied. He suggested earlier this year in an interview with Esquire magazine that Clarkson may have shot herself. He is free on $1,000,000 bail.

Spector’s lawyer Robert Shapiro has said that defence experts concluded the shooting was not a murder.

Police were alerted to the shooting by an emergency call from Adriano Desouza, Spector’s driver.

According to affidavits accompanying a search warrant request, Desouza told police he drove Spector and Clarkson from the House of Blues club to the mansion. Ten minutes after being dropped off, Spector came out and retrieved a brown leather briefcase from the car. Desouza sat in the limousine for about 90 minutes before hearing a single gunshot.

Spector came out of the rear door of the house with a gun in his hand and said: “I think I just shot her,” according to the affidavits.
