Contraceptive patch launched in Britain

Evra will be available from GPs and family planning clinics on prescription in Britain from tomorrow.

It is already available in the United States and it has become the second most prescribed hormonal contraceptive in less than 12 months. The weekly patch works by delivering continuous levels of hormones through the skin into the bloodstream.

During international trials it was shown to be 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when used correctly and this makes it comparable to the Pill. Side effects were similar to those for the Pill and less than 2% of patients suffered a reaction at the site of the patch which led to them stopping using it. The manufacturers Janssen-Cilag also pointed out that, in the event of a stomach upset, the woman will continue to get the hormone dose she needs.

The beige patch is 4.5cm by 4.5cm and the makers say it is slim enough to be worn discreetly under clothes.
