It’s a girl for Zeta Jones and Douglas

WELSH actress Catherine Zeta Jones has given birth to a healthy baby girl, her spokesperson said yesterday.

The Oscar-winner gave birth to 6lb 12oz Carys Zeta Douglas on Sunday, near the Manhattan home she shares with husband Michael Douglas and their two-year-old son Dylan.

Zeta Jones, 33, won an Oscar last month for Best Supporting Actress in the musical Chicago.

Born in Swansea, Catherine’s first success came in 1990 when she landed the role of Mariette Larkin in The Darling Buds of May television series. She went on to star in The Mask of Zorro, Entrapment and Traffic.

She now lives a life of luxury with her movie star husband, dividing her time between homes in Manhattan, Bermuda, Los Angeles, Majorca and Aspen.

The couple picked the name Carys because it is the Welsh word for love.

Long-time friends back home in Swansea spoke of their delight at the birth.

“I was really excited when I heard the news. It is especially lovely that she now has a boy and a girl,” said Hazel Johnson, Catherine’s dance teacher from the age of four.

“She is certainly sticking to her Welsh roots and Carys is such a nice name. I saw her quite recently and she was blooming, and I had an inkling then it would be a girl.”

Alex Frith, a close family friend, said: “I am absolutely delighted for her and it’s fabulous news she’s had a girl.

“She must be over the moon and I am sure Michael is as well. He has never had a daughter before.

“I am sure she will grow up to be just as beautiful as her mother.”
