Nearly 600 people were injured in the magnitude-5.6 quake, centred on Ludian county in Yunnan province, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The temblor collapsed 18,556 houses, including mud-and-wood dwellings that were damaged by temblors last November in the earthquake-prone region. It said nearly one-third of the county’s 370,000 people lost their homes.
