The Basque separatist group ETA was suspected of carrying out the explosion, TVE1 television said.

The bomb went off at 3:15pm (2.15 Irish time) in the Mediterranean town of Villajoyosa, 20 miles north-east of Alicante.

The hotel had been evacuated.

TVE1 said a warning had been telephoned to an office of the Basque newspaper Gara, the usual method for ETA warnings.
