Premier Division

Dundalk 1

Shamrock Rovers 0

Tyreke Wilson hit a stunning 78th minute volley as 10 man Dundalk shocked Shamrock Rovers.

Stephen Bradley’s side had had won just six of their last 28 visits to the Carrick Road venue before this game, with this result making it eight defeats in their last 12 trips to the border venue.

The Lilywhites did it with 10 men too after Tyreke’s brother, JR, was sent-off in the closing stages.

Last season’s First Division winners had taken just a single point from their last four matches, including losing back-to-back home games against Shelbourne and Bohemians but they gave up little against a Hoops side who missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table following St Patrick’s Athletic’s loss at home to Shelbourne.

While Stephen Bradley’s side dominated in the possession stakes, a John McGovern effort that was pushed around the post by Enda Minogue was the closest they came in a first half of few chances.

The visitors introduced the experienced duo of Graham Burke and Aaron Greene at the break with the latter passing up their best chance for a breakthrough when he pulled a shot wide in the 57th minute.

Have weathered a bit of a storm, Dundalk then hit the front in style on 78 minutes as Tyreke Wilson sent a stunning volley past McGinty from Daryl Horgan’s cross.

The Lilywhites were reduced to 10 men on 87 minutes when JR Wilson picked up a second yellow for a foul on Matt Healy but they survived the follow up free kick as Minogue brilliantly turned Dylan Watts’ effort around the post.

The Knocklyon man then made an even better stop right on 90 minutes when he clawed Greene’s header almost Gordon Banks-like away before denying Burke after Watts had headed against the post deep in stoppage time.

DUNDALK: Minogue; Warren (Spaight 85), JR Wilson, Burns; McDaid, Buckley (Tracey 59), Dervin, Horgan, T Wilson; Kenny (Groome 59); Arubi (Mullen 79).

SHAMROCK ROVERS: McGinty; Cleary (Malley 80), Grace, Stevens; Sobowale, Healy, Byrne (Watts 80), Brennan (Mulraney 62), Ozhianvuna, McGovern (Greene HT); Noonan (Burke HT).

Referee: Rob Harvey.
