Dylan McGlade put Cobh Ramblers play-off dreams back on track by getting the winner against Athlone Town at St. Colman’s Park.
The winger got the only goal of the game in the 35th minute, and that was enough to take the points.
The result keeps Fran Rockett’s side in sixth place, separated from Athlone in fifth on goal difference.
Cobh were out to make a statement after recording defeats to UCD and Bray Wanderers in their last two outings, and their night began with Rhys Kelly Noonan stinging the palms of Andrew Stuart Trainor.
Gradi Lomboto was a source of frustration at the other end, but the striker never got into a position to test Timothy Martin. The Luxembourg underage international did have to get a hand to a blistering curling strike from Brian McManus at one point during the first half.
The Ramblers responded by getting the winner, from a move involving Kai O’Neill and Kelly Noonan, and McGlade scrambled it over the goal line.
There was no immediate push for an equaliser. Instead chances fell to McGlade and Rhys Gourdie after the restart.
Anthony Adenopo was also denied by Stuart Trainor, and Wilson Waweru hit the side netting, as the home side pushed for a second goal.
All Athlone had to offer was a free kick that was easily dealt with by the Cobh defence.
