Colin Healy praised his Kerry side for securing their first-ever victory over Cork City and he believes they just wanted it more.
Former City player Niall Brookwell scored the only goal of the game as 10-man Kerry beat the Rebel Army 1-0 at Mounthawk Park on Monday evening.
Brookwell’s early strike earned the Kingdom a huge three points despite the hosts finishing the match with a man less following former City winger Cian Bargary’s second yellow card for time wasting over a long throw-in with 15 minutes remaining.
“We were brilliant. We were. We were very, very good,” began a delighted Healy when speaking to reporters afterwards.
“We know the strengths that Cork have but I thought up in Turner’s Cross for 55, 60 minutes we were excellent and we caused them problems.
“Getting a man sent off didn’t help but I knew coming into the game that if our lads we at it we would give them a good game and it was.
“It could’ve been three or four. They had chances as well but we had a lot of one on ones, Murph hit the post, Ryan was in once or twice but overall the shift, the energy, I think we wanted it more than them and I think it showed on the pitch.
“We were brilliant, every single one of them. The effort, the desire, that hunger to win, everything was there tonight. It’s a massive result for the club.
“It’s taken a bit of time this year. I can see where things are going – it’s taken a small bit longer than I thought – but you look at the performance there tonight, everybody was brilliant. I’m delighted for them, they can be proud of themselves.
“Results lately haven’t been great, I get that, I’m just as frustrated as everybody else but I’m here to work hard to change things around.”
