Inter Milan regained the Serie A title after beating head coach Cristian Chivu’s former club Parma 2-0 at the San Siro.

Inter only had to avoid defeat to seal their third Scudetto in six years having finished runners-up to Napoli last season and goals from Marcus Thuram and Henrikh Mkhitaryan either side of half-time kept them on course for a domestic double.

Chivu, who left Parma last June to replace Simone Inzaghi as Inter boss, has also guided the Nerazzurri to the Coppa Italia final, where they will face Lazio on May 13.

After Napoli were held 0-0 at Como on Saturday and AC Milan were beaten 2-0 at Sassuolo earlier on Sunday, Inter needed only a point to be crowned Italian champions for the 21st time with three league games remaining.

Domenico Berardi and Armand Lauriente were on target for Sassuolo as Milan slipped three points behind second-placed Napoli after a fourth defeat in their last seven league matches.

Juventus missed the chance to climb five points clear of fifth-placed Como in the race for a Champions League slot and needed a second-half free-kick from Dusan Vlahovic to salvage a point in a 1-1 home draw against Verona, while Bologna were held 0-0 by visiting Cagliari.

Real Madrid ensured arch-rivals Barcelona’s LaLiga title celebrations were placed on hold for another week as Vinicius Junior scored twice in a 2-0 win at Espanyol, whose winless run extended to 17 games.

Real had to win to deny Barcelona the title this weekend, but head to the Nou Camp next Sunday when Hansi Flick’s side can complete the job if they avoid defeat.

Hugo Alvarez, Iago Aspas and Borja Iglesias were all on target for Celta Vigo in their 3-1 home win against Elche, which keeps them in the hunt for a Europa League place.

Colombia forward Cucho Hernandez scored twice as Real Betis stayed on course for Europa League qualification with a 3-0 home win against bottom club Real Oviedo, while Getafe’s European hopes were dented by a 2-0 home defeat to Rayo Vallecano.

In the Bundesliga, second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who have already qualified for a Champions League place, slipped to a third defeat in their last four matches as Borussia Monchengladbach clinched a 1-0 home win, thanks to Haris Tabakovic’s late effort.

St Pauli dropped into the bottom two after they lost 2-1 at home to Mainz, with Wolfsburg climbing above them into the relegation play-off place after drawing 1-1 at Freiburg.

Lyon jumped into the final Champions League place in Ligue 1 with a 4-2 home victory over Rennes, whose own hopes of a top-three finish suffered a setback.

Lille also lost ground on the top three as they were held 1-1 at home by Le Havre and Strasbourg’s outside European hopes faded further after a 2-1 home defeat to Toulouse.

Rudy Matondo scored twice as Paris FC thrashed Brest 4-0 at Stade Jean Bouin and Auxerre gave their survival hopes a boost with a 3-1 home win against Angers.
