Norwich City have released former Ireland defender Shane Duffy, fuelling speculation of the 34-year-old becoming the latest international to join his hometown club Derry City.
Duffy made the last of this season’s four appearances back in November, a few weeks after having an on-field spat with manager Liam Manning.
A month earlier, Manning reprimanded the Derryman for calling one fan of Norwich City a ‘gimp’ in response to online criticism.
“My comment came out of frustration, not a lack of respect for the supporters — we really do value your passion and backing,” he said in his apology.
Two years ago, the 60-times capped centre-back was arrested and charged with drunk driving.
He was hit by a judge with a 36-month driving ban and fine of £27,000 after pleading guilty to the charge.
The former Everton, Blackburn Rovers, Brighton and Hove Albion and Fulham will be a free agent once the regular Championship season finishes on the first weekend of May. The Canaries are currently ninth in the second tier with two games left.
Offers to remain in the UK are inevitable for Duffy but Derry’s billionaire owner Philip O’Doherty could bankroll another marquee addition after promising further acquisitions to the capture of Duffy’s former Ireland teammate James McClean.
Also part of the release list is former Ireland U21 winger Tony Springett.
Norwich’s Sporting Director Ben Knapper said: "On behalf of everyone at Norwich City, I’d like to say a huge thank you to each of the departing players. They’ve all contributed in many different ways and have all played a part in our story. They’ll always be welcome back, and I wish them all the very best for their next steps, whatever they may be.
“Everyone at Norwich City would like to thank all departing players for their efforts and contributions and we wish them the very best for the future.”
