Jack Byrne is back in Shamrock Rovers midfield and he's enjoying his football; there's little doubt about that.

Byrne has played a significant role in the first phase of Shamrock Rovers' season, as Stephen Bradley's side settle into their League and FAI Cup defence.

The latter half of the 2025 edition of the Premier Division was spent at UAE lower-league outfit Dubai Irish, so what's it been like being back in the green and white hoops?

"Yeah, it's just been normal, really," the four-cap Irish international said on Thursday, a day out from their latest Dublin Derby against Stephen Kenny's table-topping St Patrick's Athletic in Inchicore.

"I've been here a long time, probably one of the few players that have been here from the start of the journey, where we won the FAI Cup and went on [from there].

"The Dubai thing, it was good to get over there, a good experience, working with good people, Sean O'Shea, Stephen Ward... I think that's put me in good stead from the start of the season."

On that Dubai Irish stint, Byrne added: "As much as people want to think, I wasn’t away sitting on the beach drinking strawberry daiquiris. I was playing football, I wanted to use it as a learning experience, nearly like a training camp, a new experience, keeping my fitness levels up.

"I had missed an awful long time with my knee. I had a surgery 18 months ago or two years ago but it wasn’t right so I then had to have another surgery on it after the Chelsea game [UEFA Conference League]. I missed the start of last season, the first seven or eight games.

"I needed to be playing regularly to get the best out of myself and my physical level back... I knew I was going to get back to where I wanted to be but I had to go a different route."

Having been welcomed back in Tallaght with open arms by boss Bradley, the 29-year-old has featured in every game this season, starting the vast majority for a Rovers side who sit third, just a point off leaders, St Pat's, after 10 games.

The former Man City academy talent has always valued game-time, like any pro, but has had to get to grips with the rotation that will naturally exist within a squad stacked with proven quality and youthful promise alike.

"It took a little bit of time to accept that, but it was probably the right call and probably still is the right call and it is a squad game," he said.

"Of course you want to play every minute of every game but that’s not feasible.

"We’ve built a squad over a long period of time and it has paid off. The young players coming in are doing brilliant. The older players are trying to help them as much as we can."

Byrne has rekindled his proven partnership with Graham Burke, who joined Rovers' 100-goal club in the 3-2 win over Shelbourne on Easter Monday.

With the former quickly approaching his 30th birthday and the latter on the other side of that mark, time is somewhat of the essence compared to their early days. It's about enjoying the moments.

"It’s an absolute pleasure to play with Graham; he’s one of the best players this league has ever seen, one of the best players this club has ever had," said Byrne of Burke. "I just think the older you get, we’re just enjoying playing together. As you get older, you cherish the moments a little bit more."
