Barnsley boss Conor Hourihane has secured the signing of fellow Cork native Eoghan O’Connell on a deal until the end of the 2025/26 season.
The 30-year-old centre-half began his career at Celtic, where he was named academy player of the year in 2015 and made his senior debut for the Scottish giants.Â
The Leesider gained further experience during loan spells with Oldham Athletic, home outfit Cork City, and Walsall before moving permanently to England with Bury, where he made 43 league appearances and scored twice.
Consistent performances earned him a move to Rochdale, where he featured in 115 league games.
Former Republic of Ireland underage international O'Connell later turned out for Charlton Athletic in League One, making 19 appearances and scoring once, before joining Wrexham, where he played 91 times and contributed two goals as part of their rise through the divisions.
Hourihane expressed his excitement about the signing: "We’re excited to welcome Eoghan to Oakwell. He brings real leadership, solidity, and football intelligence to our backline.Â
"His career speaks volumes—with nearly 300 league appearances and a promotion-winner, he’s exactly the kind of experienced defender we need. Eoghan fits our system and is a fantastic addition on and off the pitch."
