Man Utd manager: seven candidates to replace Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford 

The Man Utd hierarchy are again searching for a new manager. 

JOB CLUB: Andoni Iraola, Enzo Maresca and Oliver Glasner.

Ruben Amorim has been  sacked as Manchester United manager after 14 months in charge.

The Portuguese departs Old Trafford after criticising the United hierarchy following his side's draw at Leeds on Sunday, with Darren Fletcher put in temporary charge.

Here, we look at some of the potential candidates to replace Amorim on a permanent basis.

Enzo Maresca

The Italian has been out of work for less than a week after falling out with the Chelsea hierarchy. The 45-year-old won the Conference League and Club World Cup at Stamford Bridge and has been linked with a return to former club Manchester City should Pep Guardiola leave the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Oliver Glasner

Glasner guided Crystal Palace to their first major trophy by lifting the FA Cup last season. The 51-year-old Austrian, whose Palace contract expires in the summer, has been linked to several clubs amid ongoing speculation about his future. Like Amorim, Glasner is known to play a three-man defence with wingbacks.

Gareth Southgate

The former England manager is reportedly admired by the Old Trafford hierarchy and has been linked with the post in the past. Whether Southgate wants to return to management after stepping down as England boss in the wake of Euro 2024 is open to debate.

Unai Emery

The 54-year-old Spaniard has transformed Aston Villa's fortunes since taking over three years ago. Emery masterminded a thrilling Champions League campaign last season and this term has them competing for the Premier League title.

Xavi

The former Barcelona midfielder was a proven winner as a player and has carried that through to his management career. The 45-year-old won LaLiga as Barcelona coach in 2023, but left the Catalan giants the following year.

Andoni Iraola

The 43-year-old Spaniard has been tipped to take charge of a bigger club following his work on the south coast. Iraola has impressed since taking over Bournemouth in 2023, securing club-record points tallies in his two seasons at the Vitality Stadium. His three visits to Old Trafford as Bournemouth boss have included two 3-0 wins and last month's dramatic 4-4 draw.

Marco Silva

Silva's stock has risen in recent months and has extensive experience of English football having managed at Hull, Watford, Everton and Fulham. The 48-year-old Portuguese has lifted Fulham to within a few points of the Champions League places with an attractive style of play.
