Evan McLaughlin is staying in the League of Ireland Premier Division, departing relegated Cork City for their Munster rivals Waterford.

There was a strong interest in the Derry native from nearer his home city but the 23-year-old is sticking around the province to become the latest capture of new Blues boss Jon Daly.

Waterford – part of the English-based Fleetwood group – confirmed they had paid an undisclosed fee for McLaughlin, who agreed a City contract extension at the start of last season.

McLaughlin is the latest midfielder to depart City after the contract of Seán Murray was last week cancelled in a mutual decision.

City’s second relegation in three years was thrown into further turmoil when manager Ger Nash quit two days before Christmas. The squad have returned to pre-season training ahead of their opening First Division fixture against Treaty United on February 13.

“I’m delighted to finally be here at the club,” said McLaughlin. “After talking to Jon, and seeing the facilities here, it was an easy decision to join. I’m looking forward to getting to work now, meeting all the lads, and playing in front of the Waterford fans next year.”

Daly expressed his delight at the capture, adding the experienced campaigner to another ex-City player, Benny Couto, along with Hayden Cann and Luke Heeney.

“I’m really pleased to secure Evan’s signature and bring him to Waterford FC. He’s a very talented player that will add more quality to our already excellent options in the midfield and attacking third. It’s important we have competition for places across all areas of the pitch.

“Evan has a real desire to improve and develop, we believe this is the perfect environment for him to take the next step in his career.”
