Ireland captain Séamus Coleman will begin his coaching career tonight after being parachuted in to temporarily succeed sacked Everton boss Sean Dyche.
The Toffees captain (36) is currently sidelined with injury and together with Leighton Baines will assume control for the FA Cup third round tie against Peterborough.
Dyche was under pressure with the side languishing in 16th place of the Premier League table, one point above the relegation zone, but the decision to lower the axe three and half hours before their opening Cup game has come as a shock. The former Burnley boss took training this morning but the new owners have opted for change. Jose Mourinho has already been linked with the permanent vacancy.
Everton are due to move into the Bramley Dock stadium for next season.
A club statement said: “Everton Football Club can confirm that Sean Dyche has been relieved of his duties as Senior Men’s First Team Manager with immediate effect.
“Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard and Billy Mercer have also left the Club.
“The process to appoint a new manager is under way and an update will be provided in due course.
“Under-18s Head Coach Leighton Baines and club captain Seamus Coleman will take charge of first-team affairs on an interim basis.”
Since joining Everton from Sligo Rovers in 2009 for a bargain £60,000, the Donegal native has developed into a club legend, playing 426 appearances. Coleman holds the club record for Premier League games, racking up 367 outings.
