Galway United have announced the signing of former Republic of Ireland and Manchester City defender Greg Cunningham.
Cunningham began his footballing journey in Galway as a teenager with Cregmore and Mervue United before he secured his big move to Manchester at just 16 years of age.
The now 33-year-old’s standout performances for City saw him earn a place in the Republic of Ireland squad for their friendly against Argentina game at the Aviva stadium, where he came up against Lionel Messi during one of his four appearances for his country.
Over the course of his career, Cunningham made over 350 appearances in the top three divisions in England with clubs such as the current Premier League champions, Leicester City, Nottingham Forest, Bristol City, Preston North End, Blackburn Rovers and Cardiff City.
“It means a lot, being away for so long, it’s very pleasing to be back home, I’m going to give it everything I got and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead,” Cunningham told the club’s official website.

“Really looking forward to getting down here to Eamonn Deacy Park, I’ve been watching a lot of the games, the fans have been very vocal and passionate.
“I’ve always given everything every time I’m on the pitch, I think I understand the game quite well. I’ll just try to give everything to the club and help share my experience with the boys.
“It’s really important to help the younger players as much as I can, trying to improve everyone as you go along.”
Cunningham could make his Galway United debut against Longford Town in the FAI Cup second round this Friday night at Eamonn Deacy Park.
