SAVIOUR: Amadou Onana riser to head Everton's equaliser at Goodison Park.

Premier League: Everton 1 Crystal Palace 1.

The smile was wiped off the face of new Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner by Amadou Onana's late equaliser at Goodison Park last night.

When Jordan Ayew broke the deadlock of a grim battle, Glasner was celebrating with Palace chairman Steve Parrish and club stalwart Mark Bright in the directors' box But their hopes of a much-needed three points were torpedoed by Onana's towering header in the 84th minute that lifted Everton out of the bottom three.

Glasner has replaced Roy Hodgson, who stepped down yesterday afternoon so that Palace could "bring forward their plans to appoint a new manager at the end of the season".

The 49-year-old Austrian, who guided Eintract Frankfurt to the Europa League trophy in 2021, will just be glad Palace were not dragged closer to the drop zone before he takes charge officially for the first time against fellow strugglers Burnley on Saturday.

The last time Palace were at Goodison for their FA Cup third round replay in January, their fans chanted "you don't know what you're doing!" at Hodgson after he had substituted star man Eberechi Eze with his team 1-0 down.

Last night their travelling fans at least acknowledged Hodgson's work for the club over two spells as manager by chanting "he's one of our own" and holding a banner saying "thank you Roy."

Palace came into the game with 10 defeats in the past 16 games but Glasner will have seen enough to encourage him that his new charges can climb to safety.

With Hodgson's long-time No 2 Ray Lewington and coach Paddy McCarthy in charge, they were the more composed team from the start, knocking the ball around with some assurance.

James Tarkowski produced an Important early block to cut out Tyrick Mitchell's dangerous cross before Odsonne Edouard shot straight at Pickford after a good move.

It took Everton 15 minutes to muster a goal attempt and then Abdoulaye Doucoure's shot flew wide. Dominic Calvert-Lewin went close to ending his scoring drought with a header that flew just over from Dwight McNeil's cross.

James Garner sent a free-kick over the bar but Palace regained control and should have taken the lead when after fine move Daniel Munoz set up Jefferson Lerma but he sent his shot over the bar when he should have scored.

Ashley Young came to Everton's rescue when he cleared Jean-Philippe Mateta's header off the line but the frustration of the home fans at their team's failure to create more threat boiled over when both Idrissa Gueye and Young lost possession and the half-time whistle was greeted by a chorus of boos from home fans.

There was more action at both ends in the second half. Garner curled a shot wide and Vitali Mykolenko's goal-bound shot was blocked.

At the other end Pickford had to come off his line to deny Mitchell while Edouard's ambitious overhead kick sailed high over.

Everton stepped up the pressure and went close to breaking the deadlock midway trough the half when Tarkowski's header was saved by Sam Johnstone and Doucoure's follow-up shot was blocked on the line by Munoz.

But no sooner had Sean Dyche made a double change with with Jack Harrison andOnana coming on for Young and Gueye than Palace scored agaisnt the run of play.

Mateta held the ball up well before laying it off for Ayew who took a touch before rifling his shot into the far corner leaving Pickford helpless.

Everton piled on the pressure in search of the equaliser. Calvert-Lewin sent a header wide and Johnstone's made a flying save from Garner's shot.

But it was Onana who salvaged a point with a towering header at the far post from McNeil's corner.
