Hancock and Lineker apologise for mocking Luke Chadwick's appearance
Broadcaster Nick Hancock says he is âappalledâ at himself after former Manchester United player Luke Chadwick opened up on the torment his TV show caused him.
Hancock was speaking as a former host of the BBC panel show âThey Think Itâs All Overâ, which Chadwick has said he used to âdreadâ.
The show would make fun of Chadwickâs appearance as he was breaking through at United and, 20 years on, the now 39-year-old has spoken about the effect the mocking had on him.
Gary Lineker has also apologised for his role in the show.
I was part of that show, therefore, I too would like to apologise to @luke_FFF for any hurt caused. https://t.co/RcP9TXMtZT

âIn the end, it lowers your self-esteem a lot,â Chadwick told the BBC. âThatâs all Iâm known for and spoken about â the way I looked. That isnât right.â
A two-time Premier League winner with Manchester United, Chadwick added of the show: âI became a picture of fun, and that was probably the hardest thing. A popular TV show â [the attention] was magnified, so thatâs what I was seen as by everyone off the back of that.
âI used to dread it coming on the telly. I wouldnât watch it but then Iâd get a text off someone saying âoh youâve been on that show againâ as if it was a joke.
âObviously people were finding it funny, but it was eating away at me a bit inside while that was happening.â
Hancock told the BBC on Monday of his shame.
Really interesting to hear from Nick Hancock on #BBCBreakfast today. The host of âThey Think it's All Over' said he was full of admiration for former #MUFC player @Luke_FFF who talked to @BBCBreakfast about the impact of media comments about his lookspic.twitter.com/gXcJzcBUou

âListening to Luke is incredibly humbling, heâs shown so much more generosity and understanding and good judgement than we did at the time,â he said.
âIâm appalled for him and at myself. When I hear him speaking, Iâm full of admiration for the present Luke Chadwick and full of sympathy for the young Luke Chadwick.
âThe terrible thing about comedians and comedy shows is that if youâre getting laughs, you think youâre doing a good job.
âOf course the worst thing for Luke was that it became a bit of a running joke. To us it was a photograph. Thatâs not good obviously, we should have been thinking about the person, but thatâs what can happen.â
Hancock now wants to make amends in person, adding: âNobody should expect Luke to have called us on it, but it would have been effective if say the PFA (Professional Footballers Association) or his club had said something.
âIâm desperate to be in touch with him. I would be happy to meet him and hopefully we could put it to bed. If he feels he couldnât forgive me, although he sounds like he may be able to, I would understand that too.â
Lineker tweeted: "I was part of that show, therefore, I too would like to apologise to @luke_FFF for any hurt caused."
