Liverpool

Simon Mignolet: The oft-derided Belgian may not have had much to deal with but was solid when called upon. 6

Nathaniel Clyne: Forced a second-half save from the inspired David de Gea and won the penalty which opened the scoring. 7

Mamadou Sakho: A growing presence at Anfield, producing a solid, dependable display at the heart of defence. 7

Dejan Lovren: Dealt manfully with United's sporadic attacks and rarely put a foot wrong. 7

Alberto Moreno: The left-back's marauding runs caused a headache, while his pace helped out defensively. 6

Jordan Henderson: Booked in just the second minute for a lunge, but showed impressive composure and maturity to keep driving the Reds on. 7

Emre Can: An imposing shield for the hosts' defence and able to thread threatening passes. 7

Adam Lallana: The England midfielder worked tirelessly, pressing with intensity and showing some wonderful skill in the build-up to the second goal. 8

Phillippe Coutinho: Showed flashes of his brilliance and had chance to put Jurgen Klopp's men out of sight. 8

Roberto Firmino: Clever flicks and impressive vision during a fine performance capped by Liverpool's second. 8

Daniel Sturridge: Unnerved United's defence and nervelessly slotted home an important first-half penalty. 7

Joe Allen (Sturridge, 64): An intelligent change as Liverpool looked to stop the visitors enjoying possession in midfield. 7

Divock Origi (Firmo, 84): The Belgian's pace helped keep the pressure up on the visitors in the latter stages. 6

Manchester United

David De Gea: Produced a string of wonderful saves either side of half-time. Without him, this would have been a mauling. 8

Guillermo Varela: Restored to starting line-up and endured a long night, with the defence stretched from the start. 6

Chris Smalling: Not the strongest display from one of United's men of the season. A bad night at the office. 5

Daley Blind: Endured a difficult time at centre-back alongside Smalling, but improved when moved to left wing-back after a half-time reshuffle. 6

Marcos Rojo: In the away end when United won at Anfield earlier in the season, he had an experience to forget on his return. 5

Marouane Fellaini: Back in the starting line-up and an irritant for the home side. Likely to face action for late elbow. 5

Morgan Schneiderlin: Restored to starting line-up and had his work cut out, especially in the first half. 6

Juan Mata: Captained the side in Wayne Rooney's absence and worked hard making much of an impression. 5

Marcus Rashford: Ineffective display on the right from the teenager star. Withdrawn at half-time. 5

Memphis Depay: Not only guilty of taking down Nathaniel Clyne for the first-half penalty but wasteful in possession. 5

Anthony Martial: Too often isolated, allowing Liverpool's defence to neutralise his threat. 5

Michael Carrick (Rashford, 45): Brought on as United switched to 3-5-2 formation and was culpable for Roberto Firmino's goal. 5

Bastian Schweinsteiger (Schneiderlin, 79): Surprise change having just returned from injury and did not have enough time to make an impact. 5

Ander Herrera (Mata, 79): The Spaniard's passing would have been a welcome boost earlier on. 5
