Last night Anfield paid a beautiful tribute to a young fan who passed away

"The best times we shared together were at the match. I enjoyed every minute of them with my best mate and they are memories that I will cherish forever."

During last night’s Capital One Cup semi-final Liverpool fans paid a moving tribute to a young fan who passed away recently.

11-year-old Owen McVeigh was a devoted Liverpool fan who loved nothing better than going to the match with his dad.

The young lad regularly attended both home and away games, even while undergoing treatment for leukaemia.

Owen died in December and last night the Anfield faithful took the opportunity to pay their respects to the young fan they were used to having in their midst.

Before last night’s game, his father Mark wrote on Facebook about how much the planned tribute meant to him and his family.

“On Sunday at the Man United game, I approached the Spion Kop 1906 group and told them I would like to do something on behalf of Owen regarding a flag,” he wrote.

"The response I got was fantastic, I was completely blown away with what they came up with.

"These are young men that give up their time at every game to make Anfield a sea of flags and banners.”

The group created a beautiful flag showing a father and son walking hand in hand, captioned: “it's off to the match we go”.

And on the 11th minute fans in the stadium rose for a round of applause in memory of Owen. The whole stadium joined in, including stewards and manager Jurgen Klopp on the sideline.

A fitting tribute to the devoted young fan.

“I brought Owen up to understand the traditions and values of our great club and he was so proud to call himself a Liverpudlian,” Mark explained.

"The best times we shared together were at the match, and especially at the away games.

"I enjoyed every minute of them with my best mate, regardless of the result we had fantastic times together and they are memories that I will cherish forever.”
