WATCH: Brady desperate to start against Scotland
Robbie Brady says he is prepared to do anything to earn a starting spot for the Republic of Ireland in their crucial Euro 2016 Qualifier against Scotland next week.
Brady was employed in the left back role by Martin O’Neill, which meant he had to face England’s Raheem Sterling for most of today’s 0-0 draw, a task that he carried out with some success since the Liverpool star didn’t get a sniff of a chance on goal.
No mean feat for a winger filling in at left back at international level.
Brady said: “He’s quite hard to play against, he’s a top player and you’ve got to be switched on against him, but I quite enjoyed the challenge today and hopefully it puts us in good stead for next week.”
In general, England came away from today’s Aviva clash with very few chances, which some put partly down to the good defending from Ireland.
Brady said: “The lads dealt with it well, it felt quite tight knit and England didn’t cause us too many problems and hopefully we can take that into the weekend and shut Scotland down.”
Brady, who was chosen ahead of Stephen Ward for today’s friendly, hopes he has done enough to claim a place for Ireland’s clash against Scotland on Saturday.
He said: “Hopefully I did do enough to play, but it’s up to the manager. I’ll be doing all I can during the week to get myself into the starting 11.”
The Hull winger said he needed only a little bit of guidance from the Ireland manager to fill in at left back.
“A couple of little points in training. He’s given me a couple of things to watch out for with the different players I am playing against. With the likes of John O’Shea and Marc Wilson behind you, it’s been a big help and I’m looking forward to the weekend.”
A couple of Ireland’s goal chances came courtesy of Brady’s delivery at set pieces, something that may persuade O’Neill to choose him for the Scotland game.
Brady said: “I caught a couple of them well, and the lads were unlucky not to score, but if I do get a chance to send in some good balls against Scotland and earn some playing time next week, I’ll be really looking forward to it.”
