Louis van Gaal found it impossible to defend Angel di Maria after the Argentina international was sent off for grabbing the back of referee Michael Oliver’s shirt in Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Arsenal.

Van Gaal’s dream of landing a trophy in his first season at Old Trafford went up in smoke as United lost 2-1 to the Gunners on Monday night.
