Louis van Gaal has made a breakthrough in his mission to reinforce Manchester United’s defence after a deal was struck to bring Marcos Rojo to Old Trafford.

Sporting Lisbon on last night sanctioned the sale of the Argentina international to United, with Portuguese winger Nani returning to his former club as part of the deal.
