Champions held by struggling Bray - Airtricity League roundup

Struggling Bray Wanderers showed their mettle to frustrate Sligo Rovers at the Carlisle Grounds as they held the champions and league leaders to a scoreless draw.

Not surprisingly, Sligo had the chief scoring chances in the game with David Cawley curling wide on seven minutes the only real opening of note in the first half.

Cawley's central midfield partner Lee Lynch then flicked a Ross Gaynor cross over the top early in the second half before Bray almost put through their own net on 72 minutes.

Defender Daire Doyle's back header from an Alan Keane cross flew past his keeper Darren Quigley and bounced agonisingly wide as Bray survived to edge two points clear of the foot of the table.

The shock of the night came at the Brandywell as UCD completed a big week with a second successive win as they stunned second-placed Derry City with David McMillan scoring two late penalties to give College a 4-2 win.

All the goals came in the second half on Foyleside with Robbie Benson putting College ahead on the hour mark.

Derry responded well and strikes from Rory Patterson, on 67 minutes, and a free-kick from Barry McNamee, four minutes later, appeared to have the Candystripes in control.

But UCD, who beat Bohemians on Tuesday, didn't lie down. McMillan levelled the scores on 81 minutes with his first spot kick of the night after Derry defender Dermot McCaffrey was sent off for pulling down Dean Clarke.

McMillan then drove a second penalty straight down the middle five minutes later to put UCD in front before Clarke got a fourth goal in stoppage time. The win moves third-bottom UCD four points clear of the foot of the table while Derry slip four points behind Sligo.

Dundalk got back to winning ways after their defeat at Shamrock Rovers earlier in the week to beat Shelbourne - who once again finished with ten men - 1-0 at Oriel Park.

Substitute Tiarnan Mulvenna was Dundalk's matchwinner, striking for the only goal of the game on 87 minutes when he shot past Ger Hanley following a pass from skipper Stephen O'Donnell.

Shels had had defender Brain Shortall sent off - their fifth red card of the season - on 78 minutes for a bad challenge on Pat Hoban.

Cork City came from behind to beat Bohemians 2-1 at Dalymount Park, thanks to a late winner from 19-year-old striker Danny Morrissey.

Cork skipper Colin Healy shot a Stephen Traynor corner into his own net to gift Bohs a 35th minute lead.

But Cork levelled six minutes later from a Denis Behan penalty after Bohs' captain Owen Heary had pulled down Gearoid Morrissey.

Despite dominating the second half, Bohs were hit on the counterattrack on 80 minutes as Cork got their winner.

Danny Murphy put Gearoid Morrisey away on the left to cross from the end line for Danny Morrissey to sweep home the winner at the near post.
