Limerick settle for a point

Limerick had to settle for a point on their return to Premier Division action for the first time in 19 years, though the majority of the 3,578 crowd at Thomond Park will have been encouraged by their team’s positive display.

Starting with six new signings, Stuart Taylor’s newly promoted side took the game to Cork and shaded possession, but it was the visitors who had the only clear-cut chance in a tight first half.

That came on 23 minutes when a poor clearance by Limerick keeper Barry Ryan saw central defender Brian Callaghan robbed of the ball by Daryl Horgan. Ryan redeemed himself when getting down well to save winger Horgan’s low drive.

Limerick finally began to make chances from early in the second half with Craig Curran, from a header, and Axel Bessekota firing wide.

Midfielder David O’Leary then had Limerick’s best chance from a Danny Galbraith cross on 66 minutes, but looped his header over the top.
