Despite Antonio Valencia’s absence, Sir Alex Ferguson opted not to pair Rooney with Robin van Persie, with the return of Paul Scholes being the only change from the team that beat Liverpool last week.

Nani was also selected despite reports of a training ground bust-up with Davide Petrucci earlier this week, while Tottenham, seeking their first away win at United since 1989, had Steven Caulker in place of Gylfi Sigurdsson.
