McDaid helps secure victory for Derry
Monaghan United 1 Derry City 4
David McDaid scored for the third time in five league games as Derry got their Setanta Sports Cup final disappointment out of their system with a first league win in six games.
McDaid struck for the lead goal ten minutes into the second half. Rory Patterson worked the ball to his fellow striker who availed of poor defending to shoot past Michael Schlingermann in the home goal.
Bottom of the table Monaghan pressed in search of an equaliser with Derry keeper Ger Doherty saving well from Conor Murphy on 70 minutes.
The woodwork then rescued Derry on 82 minutes when Danny McGuinness rattled their crossbar.
The game finished in a glut of goals with four in the final eight minutes.
Derry doubled their lead when winger Stephen McLaughlin found the net on 84 minutes with Paddy McEleney sealing the points with a third five minutes later.
Murphy got a goal back for Monaghan right on 90 minutes. But Patterson replied in stoppage time as Derry ran out comfortable winner.
