Striker Nikica Jelavic and full-back Leighton Baines are left out of the squad entirely, with John Heitinga, Denis Stracqualursi, James McFadden, Leon Osman and Marouane Fellaini all coming into the starting line-up.

Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill has made only one change from their draw with Tottenham, David Vaughan coming in for the injured Nicklas Bendtner, but Phil Bardsley and Lee Cattermole have been passed fit.

Sunderland: Mignolet, Bardsley, Turner, Kilgallon, Colback, Larsson, Vaughan, Cattermole, McClean, Gardner, Sessegnon.

Subs: Westwood, Bridge, Wickham, Richardson, Ji, Meyler, Kyrgiakos.
