Steve McClaren’s hopes of becoming Aston Villa manager appear to have been dashed – with Rafael Benitez now the bookmakers’ favourite to succeed Gerard Houllier.

Former England head coach McClaren was due to be interviewed tomorrow by Villa owner Randy Lerner.
