Byrne bags winner for Fingal

Conan Byrne got Sporting's title aspiration back on track as they won for only the second time in eight league games.

Sporting had the best chance of a tight first half just before the interval.

Gary O'Neill skilfully carved the opening for Eamon Zayed, but Galway skipper and keeper Barry Ryan made a terrific stop.

The only goal of the game came nine minutes into the second half when winger Byrne raced away before beating Ryan with a powerful drive.

Galway did have a chance to level 20 minutes from time, but Darren Quigley in the Sporting goal was equal to Stephen Walsh's effort from Derek O'Brien's cross.
