Man City's Johnson avoids charge over fan-assault claim
Manchester City footballer Michael Johnson will face no charges over allegations he headbutted a Manchester United supporter in a nightclub.
The 22-year-old midfielder was held on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm following an incident at the 42nd Street club in Manchester city centre in the early hours of December 6 last year.
Another 22-year-old man flagged down a police patrol car outside and said he had been assaulted after reportedly singing Manchester United songs with friends in the club.
It is understood the alleged victim has since dropped his complaint.
A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said: “A 22-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm has been released without charge.
“Two other men, aged 21 and 22, interviewed under caution, will have no further action taken against them.”
A Crown Prosecution Service spokesman added: “Having considered all the evidence available, the reviewing lawyer in this case concluded that there was insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction.”
Urmston-born Johnson came through the ranks at the Premier League club’s academy.
He captained City’s FA Youth Cup team and made his first team debut in October 2006.
He has also represented England at under-19s and under-21s level, but has been dogged by injury in the last two seasons and is currently out of action after he ruptured his knee ligaments.
