The father of England footballer John Terry has been charged with dealing cocaine, sources said today.

Ted Terry, 55, is due to appear in court next month accused of supplying a class A drug.

An police spokeswoman said: “A 55-year-old man from Chafford Hundred has been charged with supply of cocaine, a class A drug, and has been bailed to appear before Basildon magistrates on May 13.”

Terry was arrested following an alleged incident at a wine bar in Chafford Hundred, Essex in November.

Earlier this year John Terry was accused of having an affair with lingerie model Vanessa Perroncel, the ex-partner of England team-mate Wayne Bridge.

In the wake of the allegations the 29-year-old was stripped of the England captaincy.

Meanwhile, an inquiry has been launched into how reporters covered the story of John Terry and his alleged affair with a French model.

Today's Guardian says the British Information Commissioner's Office will investigate whether Vanessa Perroncel's voicemail messages were intercepted.
