Busby Babe Scanlon dies

Former Manchester United winger and Busby Babe Albert Scanlon has died at the age of 74, the club have confirmed.

He had been suffering from ill health for some time.

Scanlon was one of the survivors of the Munich air disaster in 1958, in which eight of his United team-mates and three club officials lost their lives.

He recovered from a broken leg and fractured skull suffered in the crash to return to the playing field in the 1958/59 season, scoring 16 goals to help United finish runners-up in the league.

Scanlon left Old Trafford in 1960 ending a six-year association with the club. His departure was followed by spells at Newcastle, Mansfield and Lincoln.

On their website, United said in a statement: “Everyone at Manchester United sends deepest condolences to Albert’s family and friends.”
