The FAI has terminated Derry City’s contract to participate in the League of Ireland, it was announced tonight following talks at Abbotstown on the Candystripes’ premier division future.

In a statement, the FAI Board of Management said that Derry had failed to comply with the terms and conditions of the agreement, with the club having admitted to holding second illegitimate contracts with players.

Efforts are however underway to ensure that the club continues in the First Division.

“The Board has agreed that an FAI delegation will, in the coming week, meet with Derry City FC and the various other stakeholders to consider how Derry City Football Club may participate in senior football in the League of Ireland next season, at some level other than in the Premier Division,” the statement said.

The November 10 Setanta Sports Cup match involving Derry City has now been postponed, while Drogheda United will now play Bray Wanderers in the Premier Division play-off on the same date.
