The red mist descended on the Barclays Premier League this weekend, with Saturday’s tally of eight sendings-off setting a new record.

With Barry Ferguson also given his marching orders in Birmingham’s draw with Manchester City yesterday, the two-day total of nine was the highest for a decade.
