Rovers go top with Showgrounds win
Sligo Rovers 1 Shamrock Rovers 2
Gary Twigg worked the oracle yet again for Shamrock Rovers as they came from behind to win at the Showgrounds to go top of the table for the first time this season.
Sligo took the lead on 31 minutes when defender Gavin Peers’ headed clearance put Raffaele Cretaro in the clear and the striker raced away to shoot past Alan Mannus.
Shamrock brought on Graham Barrett for Dessie Baker at half-time and the substitute was instrumental in their equaliser four minutes into the second half.
Sligo defender Alan Keane upended Barrett with referee Dave McKeon pointing to the spot. That man Twigg did the rest, driving the penalty past Richard Brush.
An own goal then gifted Shamrock their winner on 70 minutes when Peers headed a corner into his own net.
The win puts Shamrock two points clear of arch-rivals Bohemians who travel to meet Derry City at the Brandywell on Tuesday before heading for Tallaght Stadium and a mouth-watering top of the table clash with Rovers on Friday.
