Keane the hero as Ireland take three points in Nicosia
Cyprus 1 Republic of Ireland 2
Captain Robbie Keane was a hero for his country again as he claimed a late winner in Cyprus to keep the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup dream alive.
The Tottenham frontman scored with just seven minutes remaining to snatch victory with the 40th goal of his senior international career.
The game looked to be heading for a draw after Marios Elia had cancelled out Kevin Doyle’s fifth-minute opener, but Keane worked his magic to keep up the pressure on Group Eight leaders Italy.
