O'Shea to wear armband for fortnight

Republic of Ireland international John O'Shea is expected to take over as Manchester United captain for the Reds' upcoming games against Burnley and Wigan as Rio Ferdinand will be out for two weeks.

Republic of Ireland international John O'Shea is expected to take over as Manchester United captain for the Reds' upcoming games against Burnley and Wigan as Rio Ferdinand will be out for two weeks.

Ferdinand is undergoing a scan today on the thigh injury that kept him out of yesterday's league opener against Birmingham.

The 30-year-old joins a lengthy injury list at Old Trafford, with Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville, Rafael, Jonny Evans and Owen Hargreaves all receiving treatment.

Nemanja Vidic, however, is back in training.
