City players must play waiting game

Cork City boss Paul Doolin and his players are hoping to be paid their deferred wages on Wednesday — the same day the club have to lodge the balance of their €439,000 debt with the Revenue to avoid being wound-up.

The Cork players, all on the open to transfer list due to the financial crisis, are due to meet with the PFAI’s Stephen McGuinness again tomorrow.

“All we can do now is wait and see what happens but the players are due five to six weeks wages at this stage and it can’t go on at this rate,” said City boss Doolin.

Cork are in Dublin on Friday night to face the champions Bohemians and meet second-placed Shamrock Rovers back at the Turner’s Cross on tomorrow night week, an attractive game that should be a big money spinner for the club.

But then they have an away fixture at Drogheda on August 21 before they meet Cliftonville at home in the Setanta Cup at the end of the month.

Cork have no suspensions for the Bohs’ clash but Joe Gamble misses out as he goes into the Santry Clinic for a scope on his knee.

The micro-surgery will be carried out by Ray Moran, a brother of ex-Manchester United, Ireland and Dublin GAA star Kevin Moran.
