North's fans' chief not expecting trouble in Pisa

Northern Ireland supporters’ chief Gary McAllister believes fans in Pisa for the friendly with Italy tomorrow will have a safe and enjoyable experience.

There are concerns trouble may break out in and around the match following the local club’s relegation from Serie B.

When the team’s fate was sealed it is understood the Pisa Ultras stormed the ground and vented their frustration by banging on the dressing room door.

Apparently a statement was then issued indicating they would not welcome the arrival of the national side after their club dropped out of the division.

It points to a hostile atmosphere both on and off the pitch but McAllister, the spokesman for the Amalgamation of Northern Ireland Supporters Clubs, is relaxed about the situation with around 150 travelling fans expected at the match.

He said: “We are aware of the reports. But the Italian authorities and the police have a wealth of experience in dealing with people trying to disrupt matches.

“I am sure they are very capable of coping with any trouble that may arise. They won’t get any bother from our fans, that’s for sure.

“Northern Ireland supporters travel throughout the world to back their team and just want to enjoy the game and have a good time.”

Five players from the JJB Premiership are in the squad – Alan Mannus and Robert Garrett (both Linfield), Colin Coates and Martin Donnelly (both Crusaders) and Coleraine’s Stephen Carson.

McAllister added: “Even though it is a depleted squad, it is a wonderful opportunity for some of those players. I hope they enjoy the occasion.

“It is also a good chance for the IFA to bring in some much-needed revenue.”

Partick’s Jonny Tuffey is set to start in goal against the world champions with Maik Taylor absent.

Tuffey said: “To earn one cap was just phenomenal, now it would be fantastic to get two – it would be beyond my wildest dreams.

“And what better way than against Italy on their home turf. They have an unbelievable team, it doesn’t matter if their manager makes changes they can still call upon quality players.

“It is a daunting prospect but we have got to be excited about playing against them.

“All of us in the squad, especially the younger players, have been given a fantastic opportunity and it is up to us to take it.

These are the games as a professional footballer you’ve got to relish.“
