Barcelona celebrations marred by violence

Over 100 people were detained and scores injured during violent scenes in Barcelona following last night’s Champions League final success by the city’s football team in Rome.

Tens of thousands of people were celebrating Barca’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United into the early hours of this morning, but the revelry was marred by ugly incidents.

During the disturbances, police made 119 arrests, while it has been reported that almost 250 people sustained injuries, with around 20 of them being taken to hospital. Among those injured were police officers.

It has been estimated that it will cost between €74,000 and €100,000 to repair the damage that was caused during the disorder.

There were also reports of incidents elsewhere in Spain as fans celebrated Barcelona becoming the first team from La Liga to win the treble of league, cup and European Cup.

Last night’s events follow on from similar scenes after Barcelona had won both the Primera Division and Copa del Rey.
