Sunderland arrived on the south coast needing a victory over Portsmouth to guarantee their Premier League survival before tackling Chelsea on the final weekend.
The Black Cats were unchanged while Portsmouth, whose top-flight survival was secured by results elsewhere over the weekend, made three changes.
Bosnian goalkeeper Asmir Begovic replaced David James to make his debut in goal while John Utaka and Kanu both returned to the starting side to form a three-man forward line alongside Peter Crouch.
