Adams knows Pompey shortcomings
Portsmouth manager Tony Adams admits he needs “one or two players” to reinforce his beleaguered squad – but is unsure how much money will be at his disposal in next month’s transfer window.
The 4-1 capitulation at home to West Ham yesterday was proof Pompey need to make additions, particularly to a defence that is shipping goals at an alarming rate.
The south coasters are creating chances, but once again there was a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal as Jermain Defoe failed to score for a seventh game running and missed a penalty that would have put his side 2-1 up on the stroke of half-time.
Left-back Nadir Belhadj gave Pompey an early advantage but Jack Collison equalised and the Hammers romped clear in the second half with Carlton Cole’s close-range effort and two fine finishes from Craig Bellamy.
Portsmouth’s midfield is now bereft of Lassana Diarra, and the £22m from his sale to Real Madrid may not be used to bring in new players in January, with owner Alexandre Gaydamak hoping to sell the club.
“January is a difficult month to make signings and the prices are always over-inflated,” said Adams.
“And it all depends on what resources the club has.”
