Bolton, looking for their third successive league win for the first time since December 2006, recalled captain Kevin Nolan following suspension, with Ricardo Gardner dropping to the bench.

Liverpool decided against including 20-year-old Stephen Darby for his league debut at right-back and switched Jamie Carragher from the centre of defence.

Sami Hyypia retained his place alongside Daniel Agger, despite a poor display in the Carling Cup defeat at Spurs in midweek.

Fernando Torres, who was taken off after 55 minutes at White Hart Lane and criticised by boss Rafael Benitez for his display, was left on the bench as Liverpool made a total of nine changes.

Bolton: Jaaskelainen, Steinsson, Cahill, Andrew O’Brien, Samuel, Taylor, Nolan, Muamba, McCann, Elmander, Davies. Subs: Al Habsi, Smolarek, Gardner, Helguson, Shittu, Basham, Obadeyi.

Liverpool: Reina, Carragher, Hyypia, Agger, Aurelio, Alonso, Mascherano, Kuyt, Gerrard, Riera, Keane. Subs: Cavalieri, Dossena, Torres, Benayoun, Babel, Leiva Lucas, Darby.

Referee: Rob Styles (Hampshire)
