St. Patrick's hit the woodwork twice as they came within inches of European glory at the RDS as Bundesliga giants Hertha limped into the group stages of the UEFA Cup.

Keith Fahey and midfield partner Gary Dempsey both hit the same post in the second half before a crowd of 4,750. A disappointing Hertha did have their chances, but were booed by their own fans at the finish as they limped into the group stages.

Despite playing against the wind, St. Pat's were the better side in the first half.

Ukrainian Andrej Voronin volleyed over on 12 minutes for Hertha, but it was Saints who had the best chance before the break on 31 minutes.

Mark Quigley outwitted Josip Simunic on the right to cross to the back post where Dempsey's header was parried away by keeper Jarolsav Drobny.

Hertha did cut St. Pat's open on 43 minutes with some delightful play by Brazilian Raffael who flicked the ball over Jamie Harris. But Damian Lynch got back to make a telling tackle on Lukasz Pisczek, forcing the Pole wide with his cross easily cleared.

A minute later at the other end, a break by Alan Kirby set-up Fahey who tried a curling shot that was narrowly wide of Drobny's far post.

Hertha had more purpose form the resumption and both Cicero, who brought a good stop from Barry Ryan, and Piszczek, who fired wide had chances before Voronin was guilty of a sitter when slicing high and wide on 52 minutes.

But Saints responded and some Fahey magic saw him create space to drill a 20 yard shot off a post on the hour mark.

A sublime pass from Fahey then put Guy in behind the Hertha defence to bring a save off the feet of Drobny.

The woodwork then came to the rescue again on 75 minutes. Fahey's corner wasn't cleared and Dempsey shot against the same post.

Saints had Lynch sent off on 87 minutes for a foul on Cicero, his second booking.
