Manchester City were at the centre of a fresh twist in a dramatic transfer deadline day amid reports they are closing in on Robinho.

City had hoped to hijack Manchester United’s bid for Dimitar Berbatov by agreeing a British record fee of over £30m for the Tottenham striker.
