The 26-year-old, who completed a £9m return to the club from Chelsea on Thursday, was included in the starting XI in one of three changes to the side which edged its way into the UEFA Cup first round in midweek.

Tal Ben-Haim, Martin Petrov and Elano made way as Wright-Phillips, Victor Kompany and Dietmar Hamann returned.

Sunderland boss Roy Keane made two changes after Steed Malbranque shook off an ankle problem with Kieran Richardson replacing Daryl Murphy and Grant Leadbitter coming in for skipper Dean Whitehead.

Sunderland: Gordon, Bardsley, Nosworthy, Collins, Chimbonda, Malbranque, Leadbitter, Reid, Richardson, Cisse, Diouf.

Subs: Ward, Miller, Murphy, Yorke, Higginbotham, Healy, Stokes.
