St Pat's through to next round of UEFA Cup

Late goals from Jason Gavin and Mark Quigley saw St. Patrick's Athletic come from behind to win and enter tomorrow's First Round proper draw of the UEFA Cup before a thrilled Richmond Park on a historic night for the club.

Despite being the better side for an hour, Saints fell behind on 62 minutes when Daniel Moback made space to shoot and his deflected shot fell to Stefan Ishizaki who shot past Barry Ryan from a tight angle.

Ryan then kept Saints in the game with a second super save of the night with his feet from Lars Nilsson three minutes later.

But Saints kept their composure and hit back to level on 86 minutes when central defender Gavin met Keith Fahey's corner to power a header to the net.

That put Saints back in front in the tie on away goals, but they made sure of their passage to today's noon draw in Monaco right on 90 minutes.

Substitute Derek O'Brien's long ball caught out Johan Wiland, who had raced wildly from his line, and striker Quigley round the stranded keeper to walk the ball into the net.

With Fahey orchestrating their midfield, there was a confidence about Saints from the start and they forced Elfsborg to play on the counterattack for much of the game.

The Swedes should have snatched the lead on 40 minutes, though, but for Ryan's first terrific stop of the night from Nilsson.

Elfsborg were better in the second half, but Saints produced the first bit of football ten minutes in when Mark O'Neill and Quigley combined to set-up Dempsey who shaved the bar with a 25 yard drive.
